the excess of $28,200 on the revised estimate for the Law

Courts is due principally to the addition of a Third Court

and to the purchase of special materials in England. The

cost of providing further accommodation for the Public

Works Department was originally underestimated and has now

been increased by $2,000. Expenditure on a quarantine

station at Laichikok was anticipated in the final paragraph

of my Despatch No. 144 of 27th. May last. The erection of

a hospital and the renewal of approach paths will be the

chief items. I have included $12,000 for additions to No. 2

Police Station. The inadequate accommodation afforded by

the existing building has necessitated the leasing of

adjoining Chinese houses, an expedient which is both costly

and unsatisfactory. It was originally intended to re-

-construct this Station on the proposed Praya East Reclama-

➡tion, but this scheme, as Your Lordship is aware, has now

been indefinitely postponed. The District Officer and his

staff at Taipo are now housed in a single room in the

Police Station, which serves at once the purpose of Police

Court, Police Office and Collector's Office. The noise and

confusion resulting from this arrangement renders the

transaction of business most difficult and I have there-

-fore estimated $10,000 for the extension of the Land

Office
